Last week Purposeful Pathways authors BethAnn Hepburn and Roger Sams had the honor of leading the Florida All-State Orff Ensemble, the first All-State Orff ensemble in the country. It was pure joy for our artist-teachers to work with these talented young musicians. They told the Japanese folktale, The Stonecutter, through music and movement. Pieces from the Orff Schulwerk Volumes were used along with two settings of Japanese folksongs that Roger arranged. Here are some pictures of the rehearsal process.

One of the songs in the Florida All-State Orff Ensemble performance was Roger’s arrangement of “Deta, Deta.” Download this video of the final rehearsal of this piece before the ensemble moved on to the stage for dress rehearsal. We think you’ll enjoy hearing this arrangement and seeing how you can utilize hand drums with finger lights or tea lights. They were quite stunning!
This week we’re giving you the lesson from Purposeful Pathways 2 that works with “Deta, Deta.” As with all Purposeful Pathways lessons, we invite teachers to select the pathways that are most useful at any given moment in time. The Florida students did not do the Haiku portion of the lesson, instead they performed shadowing with their hand drum “moons.” We hope you enjoy!
